The trend accelerated during the mid to late 2000’s recession, but has been on a downward trajectory since the 1980’s. This is concerning as many of the innovations that improve our society come from new business ventures. New businesses also provide an important source productivity gains, which is much needed in a U.S. economy that is becoming less dynamic over time.
